Gifted Guides

Even in her young teens, my daughter , Arrow #3, had an eye for colour. When I go shopping I often take her with me, when I can.

My Hubby is another - he will tell me if an outfit is "young" enough. How cool is that.

Well, recently Arrow #3 informed me that I have many spots in the house that are picture-worthy. This was something I hadn't noticed till she started posting and sharing.

During the recent lockdowns, one activity with I did was painting our house. This involved using a colour which I initially didn't like (note to self :- Hubby chose you, so don't sweat it when he chooses a colour like this!)

The end result is amazing, dreamy, but strong green-blue walls I can use for background adjustments during conference calls. Also for good photographs. Like this one.

I am glad for the suggestions and observations from gifted-eyed family...

PS They aren't the only ones!

Does She Know?

Foster son was home for a week. The week went by so quickly.

Before you knew it, he was due to fly off. He said his "Good bye be a good girl" and then got in the car to head for the airport.

I came home and saw this.
Do you think she understood?

Rallying Around

Amazing. I put one word out and the whole group rallies round. My former classmates did a relay specially for my Arrow and I. The only known "treatment" for dengue.

One collected papaya leaves. From her neighbour no less. Stripped the tree bare apparently.

Then it was specially delivered to another friend who put the leaves in a special wash.
From the wash to the special juicer. I have never seen anything like this before. Wow. No water added so pure juice comes out.
Behold the end product - special, pure, papaya juice. This goes into a cold pack because that's the way to make sure it lasts longer.
Then the passing on continues. It goes to yet another friend who then passes it to one more friend before it gets to me.

And all within a few hours.

So that Arrow #1 can have this concoction which is supposed to help get the blood platelet levels up.

Thankful. So thankful for this camaraderie...

Momma n Dotter Moments

We decided to do some baking again. Arrow #3 has her way and I have mine. Inevitably we start off clashing a little. Then we settle down in our own way.

Final product is pretty good and more importantly, we are reconciled and not enemies!

The next morning, I pack them away nicely. The smaller boxes contain the smaller cupcakes. The bigger contain the medium ones.
Every single one is to be given away eventually. I think Arrow #3 and I have had an overdose of this recipe ourselves! Haha!

Penguin Poser

The girls had gone out for lunch. They asked what I'd like. So I figured a nice cold coffee would be a treat. The coffee came in a specially sealed cup (see pic on the right)
Now, in itself, a cup like that is pretty usual. The thing was, it had a penguin on the cover. And if you knew Arrow #3, she loves penguins.

So I whatsapp-ed her with a picture of the penguin. See top middle picture.

Her reply was as expected - vintage Arrow #3 - "DID YOU KILL HIM????" meaning did I poke a straw right through the penguin to get to my drink.

I then sent her the next pic on the right to show her I didn't. To her relief.

After that, I showed the whatsapp exchange to the girls, chuckling away.

Which is what Arrow #3 expected me to do.

When did we both get so predictable? Haha!

When Someone Hurts

I find it hardest when someone you care for is going through a difficult time.

The sense of powerlessness is hard to deal with. I am aching and wanting to do something for the person, to alleviate the suffering and pain. My thoughts often go that way, and then hopelessness threatens to overwhelm.

That is when I have to run. Run to my Father God. My Daddy God.

I can tell Him everything. Even when I can't put it into words, He can see into my heart. He knows. He knows better than I know.

The matters of my heart are safe in His hands, in His care. The people I am concerned for are safest when left to Him. The issues I am disturbed about are trivia when I discourse with Him.

He sets things in perspective.

He can turn the tide.

He can calm the anger.

He knows where and when it will begin and end.

He hears.

He understands.

And that is what I am going to do after I sign off here.

What an Evening

He could barely stop grinning most of the evening. So many tales to tell with so many friends to tell them to.

Here he is, regaling them with another.
And here she is laughing at his version even as others delight in his gift of narration.
What a lot of laughter and fun there was that evening!

There was a wedding going on outside and we were definitely louder than they were when we were not filling our mouths with food!

New Old Friends

One of the nicest things about having had my parents over is this - the making of new friends. And yet not so new...
They found out that there were links, not only because of friendship of their offsprings, but also through other relatives. Then there were also links because they had common topics and had mutual friends and acquaintances. They got on really well!

Living From a Distance

What do you do when someone you care for falls ill and you are physically apart?

Does the sense of helplessness overwhelm?

Does the desire to step in and take action rise up?

Does the maternal instinct take over?

Does the paternal instinct rear up?

In my books, the hardest thing to bear is having to watch someone you love suffer and be totally unable to alleviate the suffering.

At that time, a decision has to be made. A stance has to be taken. A belief will be lived out.

But first, the question "Is God in control?" needs to be answered.

Then only can the rest take place.

Comparisons

They were visiting. Just a few hours.

Conversation turned to the children of course.

Wow. Theirs seem to get the right scholarships and jobs all the time. Especially those which are hard to get.

Wow. Even children have to be "special" - twins.

"O tell me about your children," she says. Hmmmm

Ten years ago, I would have felt uncomfortable with such people. I would not have given them much of my time. I would have felt it a waste of my time.

Today, I felt cool, calm and collected.

And I shared. I gave testimonies of how God is so good. How God is so awesome. How God is so caring.

I told of how God leads and cares for us.

And left the rest to the Holy Spirit to do.

Compared to a decade ago, I have changed.

Tired? Who Me?

I was sitting there minding my own business. Then a family came by. The mother stared at me and insisted I was tired. Very tired she said.

But frankly, as I said in reply, my spirit was alert and alive. I was not feeling tired at all.

Then later I realised that

1. my matted hair really should have been washed yesterday
2. my stuffy nose left me puffy bags under my eyes
3. my mascara had probably left streaks of black under my eyes

That, my friend, is the best way to create the optical illusion of being tired.

Though I must say that I was grateful for the caring Mother!

Perfect End to the Day

After a great time of fellowship over dinner, we adjourned to the house - young folks from the university and some adults.

There, we indulged in further fellowship.... and more.

Here, folks, is Big Mmmmommmma's indulgence.
It's a great way to end the day. Fellowship and Fei-low-ship.

Lessons from Grandma's Hands

This was emailed to me. Just had to share it here, the Big Mmmmommma site...Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. She didn't move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands.

When I sat down beside her she didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if she was OK.

Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head and looked at me and smiled. 'Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking,' she said in a clear strong voice.

'I didn't mean to disturb you, grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK,' I explained to her.

'Have you ever looked at your hands,' she asked. 'I mean really looked at your hands?'

I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making.

Grandma smiled and related this story:

'Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life.

'They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor.

They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child, my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war.

'They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special

They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse.

'They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand.

They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer.

'These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of life.

But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of God.'

I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my grandma's hands and led her home. When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband I think of grandma. I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God.

I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.

The PUB

TRUST - a crucial factor in all good relationships. When trust is lost, the relationship is broken.

A story is told of telephone operator who one day received a phone call.

She answered, 'Public Utilities Board.'

She was met with silence on the other end of the line.

Sensing that there was someone there, she spoke again, but this time, said 'P.UB.'

Still the silence.

Then just as she was about to hang up, she heard a lady's voice speaking faintly, "Oh, so this is PUB."

The lady went on to explain, "Sorry, I got this number from my husband's shirt pocket. And errr... I did not know whose number it was."

I wonder what would be the outcome for this couple had the female telephone operator answered with just 'hello' instead of 'PUB'?

Something

There is something about going for a prayer meeting with your own child because he/she wants to go.

There is something about being able to hold hands in public with a praying child who is of your own.

There is something about agreeing in prayer with someone praying fervently who is your child.

There is something about knowing that your child is storming the spiritual realm over the same matters that you are.

Whilst humbling,

it also feels good.

Our Anniversary

It was a casual remark - telling an old friend that it was our wedding anniversary.

"Where are you going for dinner?" asked the friend.

"Oh," I replied, a little embarrassed because we hadn't discussed dinner plans due to our busy schedules of late, "probably eat at home." Grin in a silly way. "We haven't got a maid," I add. As if that was a good reason to eat at home! (Actually rather illogical, I know)

Friend shakes head and mutters something like, "Amazing". I continue in flustered tones because I don't want it to seem that we aren't a loving couple, that our anniversary isn't important, etc, "We just came back from England. That's good enough!"

End of conversation.

Or so I thought.

Later, I met this friend again.

A surprise was sprung. Suddenly before me was an envelope. It contained a dinner voucher for a lovely Italian Restaurant downtown. It had to be just obtained. Specially obtained.

"Have a good dinner, enjoy yourselves. You deserve it".

Wow.

So we went.
Upon arrival, the Captain came over to our table and asked for our voucher. How did he know? He mentioned our friend's name. As I suspected, the voucher was obtained a few hours earlier upon learning of our special day. It made the evening more special as we gave thanks for good friends.

This is what I ordered - roast lamb with apple sauce. It was absolutely delicious.
This is what my husband of twenty-seven years had - roast beef with a lovely sauce and side dishes.Good food with good company, thanks to good friends. A memorable evening indeed.

P.S. It was our anniversary, but because we very rarely have dinner together as a family in this nice restaurant, we brought the children along! It was also an opportunity for them to experience the generosity of friends, and as my eldest said, "Giving of vouchers is an excellent idea" Hence they learn from example and observation.

Across Cultures

This is my friend G and her husband O whom we met after a lapse of more than twenty years. We did our midwifery training together. By the end of the course, they were expecting their first of three children. They remain happily married, worshipping at a local vibrant church in east London.
My family tree has inter-marriages of all combinations. Different faiths too. It makes to more flexible to the idea of cross-cultural unions, despite my marrying one of the same race. Hubby and I are from different dialects and backgrounds, which could in a sense, be totally different too! But cross-cultural combinations like G and O above mean there are more differences to consider.

As Christian parents, it is our duty to train the children to be able to handle cross culture because Jesus Himself commands us to go and make disciples of all nations. Nations here means ethnic groups. We should have emphasis on cross cultural training in order to fulfill this often-called Great Commission.

The challenge is whether we would go as far as cross cultural marriages.

Visiting Mentors

We should always be willing to learn, to sit at the feet of others. This is one couple we have learned much from. Sacrificial giving is just one aspect of their lives. They were constantly giving of themselves and opening of their home. They were the ones from whom wise counsel always flowed. Their perceptions and insights were sharp and beyond the normal train of thought. Inspired, one would say. They invested their lives into the lives of others.

And we have been blessed to have tasted a small part.

We love you Bill and Shirley and are so glad to have spent those precious few hours with you. This was one of the highlights of our recent trip.

If we are but a fraction of what they are and have been, we would have touch lives indeed.

Anticipating Tears

Memo #1 to self:
If approached repeatedly concerning a problem do not take it lightly.

Memo #2 to self:
If approached repeatedly concerning a problem with signs and sounds of distress, do NOT take it lightly.

Memo #3 to self:
If approached a penultimate time concerning a problem at an early hour of the morning (when one should be having a lie-in), do not be flippant despite being desperately groggy and half awake.

Memo #4 to self:
When all the above presents itself, make a beeline to the distressed person concerned and offer comfort immediately.

Memo #5 to self:
When offering comfort, company is more important than comfort food.

Memo #6 to self:
When applying all the above, pray unceasingly.

Laughing Together

Today we sat down for dinner as we often did.

Each one had a little anecdote to share.

Laughter tinkled during the meal.

After some plates were emptied, we lingered on to listen and share more.

In a few weeks time, this will be no more.

Treasuring these moments.
